CARDIFF twin home
The site is in a very dense but friendly residential area of Cardiff by the Sea a few blocks from the beach. With neighbors only ten feet away along the both side yards, balancing privacy, views and natural light and creating indoor/outdoor living spaces help define the creative arraignment of spaces on both floors and below grade basements. Energy efficiently is achieved by a formula with only 4% of total floor area having south and west facing glass, natural light and fresh air pours in from the north/south windows, gable roof clerestories and operable skylights in vaulted ceilings. Generous roof overhangs also provide shade and reduce heat. Orientation is for a large south shed and solar collection for PV panels. The modest and efficient three level structure is roofed with pre-finished metal panels. Cement stucco and cement siding cover the walls. Wood doors, stainless steel rails, natural stone and wood floors are all suited for the harsh marine climate and create interesting, lively compositions of texture and light. A basement living unit is set below street level with private outdoor patios.
